Crowns & bridges

What are crowns and bridges?

A dental crown is a durable restoration that is placed over a damaged or weakened tooth. A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth and is supported by neighbouring teeth or other suitable structures.

When is a crown or bridge needed?

A crown may be recommended when a tooth has become too weak or damaged to be restored with a regular filling. A bridge may be an option when one or more teeth are missing. The most suitable solution depends on your oral health, the condition of your teeth and your personal preferences.

What symptoms may indicate that you need a crown or bridge?

A severely broken tooth, a large filling that repeatedly breaks, difficulty chewing or a missing tooth may be reasons to discuss a crown or bridge. Not every problem that requires a crown or bridge causes pain.

What happens during the treatment?

We first examine your teeth and discuss the available treatment options. If necessary, the affected teeth are prepared and measurements or scans are taken so that the crown or bridge can be made to fit accurately. In many cases, you will receive a temporary restoration while the final crown or bridge is being made.

Does the treatment hurt?

If tooth tissue needs to be treated, a local anaesthetic can be used. This usually makes the procedure comfortable. The area may feel slightly sensitive for a short time after treatment.

How long does the treatment take?

A crown or bridge is usually not completed in one short appointment. Several steps are normally required, including preparation, fabrication and final placement.

What can you expect after a crown or bridge is placed?

A new crown or bridge may feel slightly different from your natural teeth at first. We check the fit and your bite carefully. Good daily oral hygiene remains important, especially around the edge of the restoration and along the gum line.

How much does a crown or bridge cost?

The cost depends on the type of restoration, the number of teeth involved, the dental procedures required and any material or dental laboratory costs. For more extensive crown or bridge treatment, we will usually provide a cost estimate in advance.

Are crowns and bridges covered by health insurance?

For adults, crowns and bridges are generally not covered by Dutch basic health insurance. Depending on your additional dental insurance, you may be entitled to partial reimbursement. Different rules and exceptions may apply to younger patients, so always check your own insurance policy before assuming that treatment is covered.

When should you contact the dentist?

Please contact us if a crown or bridge becomes loose, breaks, causes pain or if you continue to feel that your bite is not right after placement.
