Fillings
What is a dental filling?
A dental filling is used to repair a damaged part of a tooth. This is often needed when tooth decay has caused a cavity. A filling can also be used to restore a small chip or other minor damage.
When is a filling needed?
A filling may be needed if you have tooth decay, a chipped or broken tooth, or an existing filling that no longer fits properly. The dentist will first assess how much of the tooth has been affected.
What symptoms may indicate that you need a filling?
A cavity may not cause any symptoms at first. Over time, you may notice sensitivity to cold, heat or sweet foods, pain when chewing or spontaneous toothache.
What happens during the treatment?
The damaged or decayed tooth tissue is removed and the tooth is carefully cleaned. We then place the filling material and shape it so that it fits comfortably with your bite.
Does getting a filling hurt?
If necessary, the tooth can be numbed with a local anaesthetic. This usually makes the treatment comfortable. If you are worried about pain or injections, please let us know so we can take extra time and explain each step clearly.
How long does a dental filling take?
The treatment time depends on the size and location of the filling and on how many teeth need treatment. A small filling usually takes less time than a more extensive restoration.
What can you expect after a filling?
The treated tooth may feel slightly sensitive for a short time after the procedure. If the filling feels too high when you bite, or if sensitivity continues, please contact us.
How much does a filling cost?
The cost depends on factors such as the size of the filling, the number of surfaces that need to be restored and the treatment required. We can give you a more accurate estimate after examining the tooth. Dental treatments in the Netherlands are subject to nationally regulated NZa fees.
Is a filling covered by health insurance?
For adults, fillings are generally not covered by Dutch basic health insurance. Additional dental insurance may provide reimbursement, depending on your policy. For children under the age of 18, much of regular dental care, including many common fillings, is covered by the basic health insurance.
When should you contact the dentist?
Please contact us if you develop increasing or throbbing pain, swelling, persistent pain when biting, a broken filling, or if a recently treated tooth becomes increasingly sensitive.
