What are dental hygiene and gum treatments?
Dental hygiene focuses on keeping your teeth, gums and overall oral health in good condition. During treatment, plaque and tartar can be removed and you will receive advice on your daily oral care routine. If you have more advanced gum problems, a more extensive gum treatment may be necessary.
When is gum treatment needed?
Treatment may be needed when the gums are inflamed or when gum disease has progressed around the teeth. A large amount of tartar or areas that are difficult to keep clean may also be a reason for treatment.
What symptoms may indicate gum problems?
Possible signs include bleeding gums, red or swollen gums, bad breath, receding gums and sensitivity. In more advanced cases of gum disease, teeth may eventually become loose.
What happens during treatment?
We first assess the condition of your gums. Plaque and tartar can then be carefully removed. If the gum problems are more extensive, treatment may be spread over several appointments and we will monitor how your gums respond and recover.
Does gum treatment hurt?
Cleaning is usually well tolerated when the gums are healthy. Inflamed or sensitive gums may feel more tender during treatment. For more extensive treatment, we will discuss the options available to make your visit as comfortable as possible.
How long does the treatment take?
This depends on the amount of tartar present and the severity of any gum problems. A routine maintenance appointment may be relatively short, while more extensive gum treatment may require several appointments.
What can you expect after treatment?
Your gums may feel slightly sensitive for a short time and may occasionally bleed a little. With successful treatment and good daily oral care, the inflammation should gradually reduce. Regular maintenance appointments may still be recommended.
How much does dental hygiene treatment cost?
The cost depends on factors such as the treatment time required and the type of gum treatment you need. Dental care in the Netherlands is subject to the nationally regulated maximum fees set by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).
Is dental hygiene covered by health insurance?
For adults aged 18 and over, reimbursement usually depends on your additional dental insurance. For children under the age of 18, a large part of routine dental care is covered by Dutch basic health insurance. Always check the conditions and maximum reimbursement of your own insurance policy.
When should you contact the dentist or dental hygienist?
Please contact us if your gums bleed heavily or spontaneously, become very swollen or painful, if you notice pus, if a tooth feels loose, or if your symptoms continue despite good daily oral care.
