What is a routine dental check-up?
A routine dental check-up is a regular examination of your teeth and overall oral health by the dentist. We check your teeth, gums and any existing fillings, crowns or other restorations. The aim is to detect problems at an early stage, preferably before you notice any symptoms yourself.
When is a routine dental check-up needed?
Regular dental check-ups are important for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. How often you should have a check-up depends on your oral health, dental history and your risk of developing problems such as cavities or gum disease. What symptoms should I look out for?

How much does a routine dental check-up cost?
Dental fees in the Netherlands are subject to nationally regulated maximum rates set by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa). The final cost depends on what is carried out during your appointment, for example whether you only have a routine check-up or also require additional examinations or dental X-rays.
Is a routine dental check-up covered by health insurance?
For adults aged 18 and over, routine dental check-ups are generally not covered by the Dutch basic health insurance. Additional dental insurance may provide partial or full reimbursement, depending on your policy. For children under the age of 18, most routine dental care is covered by the basic health insurance. Always check your own insurance policy for details about reimbursement.
When should I contact the dentist?
Contact your dentist sooner if you develop toothache, break a tooth, experience persistent bleeding or swollen gums, lose a filling or crown, or have any other concerns about your teeth or oral health.
