Preventive dental care
What is preventive dental care?
Preventive dental care focuses on helping to prevent cavities, gum problems and other oral health issues. We do not only look at what we can see in your mouth at that moment, but also at how you can keep your teeth and gums healthy in the long term.
When is preventive dental care needed?
Preventive dental care is useful for almost everyone. Extra attention may be helpful if you regularly develop cavities, have a lot of plaque or tartar, experience sensitive gums or find certain areas difficult to clean properly.
What symptoms may indicate that extra preventive care is needed?
Preventive care ideally starts before problems occur. Signs that extra attention may be needed include bleeding gums, bad breath, sensitive teeth, recurring cavities or a build-up of plaque and tartar.
What happens during preventive dental care?
We look at the factors that may affect your oral health. You receive personal advice about brushing, cleaning between your teeth and other daily habits. If necessary, professional teeth cleaning or additional preventive treatment can become part of your care plan.
Does preventive dental care hurt?
Advice and oral hygiene instructions are painless. If your teeth are sensitive or your gums are inflamed, professional cleaning may sometimes feel slightly uncomfortable. We always take your comfort into account.
How long does preventive dental care take?
The duration depends on what you need. A short brushing instruction takes less time than a more extensive preventive appointment combined with professional teeth cleaning.
What can you expect after the treatment?
You will have a better understanding of how to care for your teeth and gums at home and which areas may need extra attention. After professional cleaning, your teeth or gums may feel slightly sensitive for a short time.
How much does preventive dental care cost?
The cost depends on the preventive treatment provided and the amount of treatment time required. Dental treatments in the Netherlands are subject to nationally regulated maximum fees set by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).
Is preventive dental care covered by health insurance?
For adults, reimbursement usually depends on whether you have additional dental insurance. For children under the age of 18, most routine dental care is covered by Dutch basic health insurance. Your exact reimbursement depends on your age, treatment and insurance policy.
When should you contact the dentist?
Please contact us if your gums bleed regularly, you keep developing new cavities, your gums are receding, your teeth feel loose or you notice any other changes in your mouth.
