What are dentures?
Dentures replace missing teeth. A partial denture can be used when you still have some of your own teeth, while a full denture replaces all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
When are dentures needed?
Dentures may be considered when several or all teeth are missing or can no longer be preserved. An existing denture that no longer fits properly can also be a reason to have your mouth examined.
What symptoms may indicate that you need dentures?
Difficulty chewing, loose or severely damaged teeth, sore spots caused by an existing denture, loose-fitting dentures or changes in the fit of your denture are all reasons to make an appointment.
What happens during the treatment?
We first examine your mouth and discuss which type of denture may be suitable for you. Several steps are then needed to record the shape of your mouth, your bite and the correct fit. After a new denture is placed, we check whether any adjustments are needed.
Does getting dentures hurt?
Having dentures fitted should not be painful. After placement, you may develop pressure points while your mouth adjusts to the new denture. These can often be relieved by making small adjustments to the denture.
How long does the treatment take?
Making a denture usually requires several appointments. The total treatment time depends on the type of denture and your individual oral situation.
What can you expect after receiving dentures?
A new denture takes some time to get used to. Speaking and eating may feel different at first. It may also be necessary to adjust the denture one or more times after placement to improve the fit and comfort.
How much do dentures cost?
The cost depends on the type of denture and the dental and laboratory work required. We can discuss the expected costs and any possible personal contribution with you in advance.
Are dentures covered by health insurance?
For adults in the Netherlands, Dutch basic health insurance may cover full removable dentures under certain conditions. A personal contribution and the mandatory excess may apply. Coverage for partial dentures can be different. We therefore recommend checking your individual insurance policy before treatment.
When should you contact the dentist?
Please contact us if you develop painful pressure points, sores that do not heal, a broken denture, a significant change in fit, or if you are no longer able to eat or speak comfortably with your denture.
