What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, treats the inside of a tooth, where the nerve and blood vessels are located. When this tissue becomes inflamed or infected, the root canals may need to be treated in order to save the tooth.
When is a root canal treatment needed?
A root canal treatment may be necessary when the tissue inside a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This can happen because of a deep cavity, a leaking filling or restoration, a crack in the tooth or previous damage.
What symptoms may indicate that you need a root canal treatment?
Possible symptoms include severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, pain when chewing, swelling or a small lump on the gum. Sometimes there is little or no pain, and the problem is discovered during an examination or on a dental X-ray.
What happens during a root canal treatment?
The tooth is usually numbed with a local anaesthetic and carefully opened. The root canals are then cleaned and disinfected. After this, the canals are filled and the tooth is sealed. Depending on the condition of the tooth, an additional restoration may be needed afterwards to protect it properly.
Does a root canal treatment hurt?
Root canal treatment is usually carried out under local anaesthetic. This means you should not feel sharp pain during the procedure. An inflamed tooth may already be very painful before treatment and can remain sensitive for a short period afterwards.
How long does a root canal treatment take?
The length of the treatment depends on factors such as the number of root canals and the complexity of the tooth. In some cases, treatment can be completed in one appointment. In other situations, several appointments may be needed.
What can you expect after the treatment?
The treated tooth may feel sensitive when biting for a few days. This should gradually improve. If necessary, we will then discuss how the tooth should be permanently restored and protected.
How much does a root canal treatment cost?
The cost of a root canal treatment varies depending on the tooth being treated, the number of root canals, any dental X-rays required and possible additional restorative treatment. Based on your individual situation, we can discuss a treatment estimate with you in advance. Dental fees in the Netherlands are subject to maximum rates set by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).
Is a root canal treatment covered by health insurance?
For adults, root canal treatment is generally not covered by Dutch basic health insurance. Additional dental insurance may reimburse part of the cost, depending on your policy. Different rules apply to children under the age of 18. Always check your own insurance policy for details.
When should you contact the dentist?
Please contact us if the pain becomes significantly worse, if you develop visible swelling or a fever, if swallowing or opening your mouth becomes more difficult, or if you are concerned about your recovery after treatment.
